Ford has announced that Moray Callum has been named executive director for Ford Americas design (based in Dearborn), effective May 1.
He will replace Peter Horbury, who will return to Volvo as vice president, Design, based in Gothenburg, Sweden, filling the position held by Stephen Mattin, who has left Volvo to pursue other opportunities.
In addition to lead responsibility for all Ford cars and trucks designed in North and South America studios, Callum also will guide the design of Lincoln and Mercury products.
“Moray’s success both at Mazda and in North America provide him with the experience to lead the Americas design team in developing cars and trucks that will build on our design leadership in the American marketplace,” said J Mays, group vice president of design and chief creative officer.
Born in 1958, Moray Callum graduated from Napier University in Edinburgh with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial
Design. He also holds a master’s degree in Transportation Design from the Royal College of Art in London.
Callum’s international design career started in 1982, when he began working for Chrysler Corp. UK and then Peugeot-Citroen PSA on passenger and commercial vehicles.
After six years, he joined Ghia Spain as a consultant designer. His work included the Ghia Via concept vehicle in 1989, leading Ghia’s design consultancy to Jaguar, and the Aston Martin Lagonda Vignale concept.
Callum joined Ford in 1995, where he designed key North American products – including the Ford EX off-roader concept – and production vehicles such as the last-generation of Super Duty pickups.
In 2001, Callum was appointed to lead Mazda’s design organization globally.
Highlights of his Mazda tenure included the design of the 2003 Mazda 3, 2005 Mazda MX-5, 2006 Mazda 5, 2007 CX-7 and CX-9, and the 2008 Mazda 6, plus a series of concept vehicles including the Washu, Ibuki, Kabura, and Senku.
On May 1, 2006 he was appointed Design director – Cars, responsible for implementing the design strategy and execution involving all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars in North America.

Since returning to Ford’s Americas, Callum has overseen the design of the 2010 Ford Taurus. He also directed the teams that developed the 2010 Mustang, Fusion, and Mercury Milan designs.
